When is a student considered "independent" for financial aid by the federal government so that his/her parents' income and assets aren't counted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)?
Under federal guidelines, the parents' income and assets are counted until the student turns 24 years of age. Exceptions to this general rule are made for veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, students with dependent(s) other than a spouse, married students, students in graduate or professional schools, or students who are orphans or wards of a court.
What is Work-Study and how do I get it?
Federal Work-Study is a federally subsidized program that provides jobs for students with financial need. Work, like gift aid, is another way to reduce your indebtedness. Jobs may be on campus or in community service organizations. Undergraduate students meeting the March 1 priority deadline will automatically be considered for Work-Study if they indicate their interest on the FAFSA form. Because of federal funding limitations, high need students receive first consideration. If a student is not offered or qualified for federal work study, there is still a vast number of other on-campus (non work study) jobs that they could receive. Contact Missouri S&T's Student Life Office for non-work study jobs that may be available to you.
How do I become a Missouri resident?
To find out how to become a Missouri Resident, contact the Registrar's Office [online].Missouri S&T offers a large number of scholarships to assist non-Missouri residents in paying their out of state fees. Visit Missouri S&T's Student Financial Assistance Office Web sitefor a listing of Non-Missouri Scholarships that may be available to you.
Do my stepparents' income and assets have to be reported on the FAFSA?
If the parent whose information you are reporting on the FAFSA is remarried as of the date you complete the FAFSA, include information about your stepparent.
How is my financial aid applied?
The majority of financial aid awarded to a student on a semester basis is applied to a student's University account. If there is a credit balance after it is applied, you will receive proceed funds.
